As of November 5, 2011, no new applications to sponsor parents or grandparents will be accepted for processing for up to 24 months. This temporary pause will allow CIC to focus on those applicants already awaiting a decision and reduce the backlog in the parents and grandparents category. This does not affect sponsorship applications for spouses, partners, dependent or adopted children and other eligible relatives.
If you are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident you may sponsor your spouse, common-law partner, conjugal partner, dependent child(ren), or other eligible relatives (parents or grandparents) to come and live in Canada. In order for a foreign national to immigrate to Canada by way of family sponsorship, the foreign national must have a close relative living in Canada.
If you sponsor your relative to come to Canada, you are responsible for supporting your relative financially when he or she arrives. As a sponsor, you must make sure your spouse or relative does not require financial assistance from the Canadian government.
2 different categories for sponsoring your family:
- Spouses, Partners, Dependent Children
- Parents, grandparents, brothers or sisters, nephews or nieces, granddaughters, or grandsons who are orphaned, under 18 years of age and not married or in a common-law relationship
To qualify to apply under the Canada Family Class Sponsorship Program the relationship between the sponsor and the sponsored person must be one of the following;
- spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner, or
- parent or grandparent, or
- dependent child, or
- brother, sister, nephew, niece, or grandchild who is orphaned, under the age of 18 and not married or in a common-law relationship, or
- intended adopted child under the age of 18
