Extend your Work Permit
How to work longer in Canada as a foreign worker or a in-home caregiver and how to get an open work permit.
Foreign Workers
You must apply to extend your work permit if you want to stay in Canada for any of the following reasons:
- Your Job is extended or changes
- You are offered a different job in Canada
- You want to live in work in Canada permanently
- You want to leave Canada and then re-enter
In-Home Caregivers
You are responsible for making sure that your In-home Caregiver Program work permit is extended before the expiry date.
- If your employment situation changes and you wish to work for a new employer, you will first need to apply for a new work permit
- If you quit or lose your job, additional support may be available.
- You may be eligible to apply for permanent residence in Canada after you have gained enough work experience as a live-in caregiver.
The date when your work permit expires is on the work permit. You should apply to extend your work permit at least 30 days before the expiry date. Your temporary status as a worker will continue under the same conditions until your application is processed, and you have been notified of the decision.
Open Work Permit
To qualify, you must have applied under the:
- Federal Skilled Worker Program,
- Canadian Experience Class,
- Federal Skilled Trades Program,
- Provincial Nominee Program,
- Caring for Children Class, or
- Caring for People with High Medical Needs Class.
You must also:
- currently be in Canada,
- have valid status on a work permit that is due to expire within four months,
- have applied for an open work permit, and
- have paid the processing fee and the Open Work Permit Holder fee.
Note: If you applied under the Provincial Nominee Program, you must not have employment restrictions as conditions of your nomination.
